Port of Bideford Successfully Passes Oil Spill Response Assessment!

Port of Bideford Successfully Passes Oil Spill Response Assessment!: 3-89

On Thursday 17th July the Port of Bideford successfully completed its triennial Oil Spill Response and Preparedness Assessment, conducted by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). This statutory assessment is a vital requirement for all UK ports, ensuring they are fully equipped and trained to respond swiftly and effectively to oil pollution incidents within their harbour limits.

The Port demonstrated its operational readiness through a live deployment exercise, simulating an oil spill from a moored vessel. The scenario tested both Tier 1 response capabilities — the Port’s own trained personnel and equipment — and Tier 2 support, provided by environmental response specialists Adler and Allan. The exercise was also attended by staff from Royal Marines Instow.

Key Components of the Exercise:

  • Deployment of containment booms to isolate the simulated spill, with assistance from the Port’s pilot boat.
  • Activation of a floating oil skimmer, designed to recover oil from the water’s surface.
  • On-the-job training and requalification for Port staff.
  • Support was provided by Adler and Allan, who supplied a fully equipped response truck and trained operatives to assist the Port team.

The exercise was organised by Deputy Harbour Master, Martyn Bennett, who ensured the scenario was both realistic and challenging. Following the exercise, the MCA awarded the Port a ‘Good’ assessment and a pass grade, reinforcing confidence in the Port’s preparedness and environmental protection standards.

Councillor Bob Hicks, Lead Member for Economy & Estates, commented;

“It is great to see that the exercise was successful. I would like to thank the team, especially Martyn Bennett, for organising the exercise. Our team put in significant effort to achieve a positive outcome. We can be confident that if an oil spill were to occur in the Port of Bideford, we have a reliable group of qualified individuals ready to respond quickly and efficiently.”
