Torridge Council are backing a call for Farmers to book a slot and take their plastic waste from farming activities along to the next farmers market at Holsworthy Livestock Market on Monday 24th May. The initiative is being promoted by the Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group Southwest (FWAG SouthWest), which is a registered charity representing the region’s farmers and landowners in the delivery of wildlife conservation. The organisation was established in the 1960s by a group of farmers who saw that the environment was an important part of a successful farming business. The groups vision is to promote and enhance the conservation of wildlife, the environment and the landscape in relation to modern agricultural needs.
The recycling scheme is now in its 17th year and has been extended in 2021 to set up a collection point at Holsworthy Market. The scheme provides farmers with a responsible, environmentally sound way to recycle plastic, preventing it from going to landfill. Booking is required and more information including how the waste should be separated and bundled can be found at https://www.fwagsw.org.uk/event/farm-plastics-recycling-scheme or by calling 01823 660684.
Torridge District Councillor and Lead Member for Climate Change Peter Hames said:
“Any initiative that seeks to promote recycling and re-use of resources, and particularly plastic, is to be welcomed. This particular scheme has been ably organised by the FWAG and has now been running since 2004, which shows how ahead of their time the organisation was in starting this programme.
All the plastic collected is re-processed and then turned into products, many of which are for use on the farm such as animal shelters and walkways. So this is an important initiative that contributes to the circular economy and it is great that farmers have been keen to play their part. We would encourage anyone yet to book their slot at Holsworthy to put this on their to-do list ahead of the market on the 24th May.”
